Why Do the Wicked Live?

WHY ARE SATAN AND SIN PERMITTED?

“Wherefore do the wicked live?”— Job xxi: 7,

By T DeWitt Talmage

Poor Job! With tusks and horns and hoofs and stings, all the misfortunes of life seemed to come upon him at once. Bankruptcy, bereavement, scandalization, and eruptive disease so irritating that he had to re-enforce his ten finger-nails with pieces of earthenware to scratch himself withal. His wife took the diagnosis of his complaints and prescribed profanity. She thought he would feel better if between the paroxysms of grief and pain he would swear a little. For each boil a plaster of objurgation.

Probably no man was ever more tempted to take the bad advice than when, at last, Job’s three exasperating friends came in, Eliphaz, Zophar, and Bildad, practically saying to him, “You old sinner, serves you right; you are a hypocrite; what a sight you are! God has sent these chastisements for your wickedness.”

The disfigured invalid, putting down the pieces of broken saucer with which he had been rubbing his arms, with swollen eyelids looks up and says to his garrulous friends in substance, “The most wicked people sometimes have the best health and are the most prospered,” and then in that connection hurls the question which every man and woman has asked in some juncture of affairs, “Wherefore do the wicked live?”

The Lamb or the Ass?

The Jackass or the Lamb?

By Charles H. Spurgeon / Edited by Ron English

Exodus 34:20:  But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck.

Every firstborn creature must be the Lord’s, but since the ass was unclean, it could not be presented in sacrifice. What then?

Should the ass be allowed to go free from the universal law? By no means. God permits no exceptions.

The ass, because he is a first-born, is God’s due, but He will not accept it; He will not suspend the claim, but yet He cannot be pleased with the victim. No way of escape remained but redemption…the creature must be saved by the substitution of a lamb in its place; or if not redeemed, it must die.

My soul, here is a lesson for thee. That unclean animal is thyself; thou art justly the property of the Lord who made thee and preserves thee, but thou art so sinful that God will not, cannot, accept thee; and it has come to this, the Lamb of God must stand in thy stead, or thou must die eternally.

Let all the world know of thy gratitude to that spotless Lamb who has already bled for thee, and so redeemed thee from the fatal curse of the law. Must it not sometimes have been a question with the Israelite which should die, the ass or the lamb? Would not the good man pause to estimate and compare? Assuredly there was no comparison between the value of the soul of man and the life of the Lord Jesus, and yet the Lamb dies, and man, the ass, is spared.

My soul, admire the boundless love of God to thee and others of the human race. Worms are bought with the blood of the Son of the Highest! Dust and ashes redeemed with a price far above silver and gold!

What a doom had been mine had not plenteous redemption been found! The breaking of the neck of the ass was but a momentary penalty, but who shall measure the wrath to come to which no limit can be imagined? Inestimably dear is the glorious Lamb who has redeemed us from such a doom.

Editors Note: If you have just read this brief word of devotion given by London’s Prince of Preachers, Charles H. Spurgeon, I hope you have let it seep deep into your mind and heart.  Have you seen your self in the word pictures he has painted on your heart?  Have you, dear one, trusted fully in The Christ, God’s spotless Lamb, and your sins washed away?  I pray you have, but if not, I urge you to turn to Him right now in soul-saving faith.  Believe on Him with your whole heart.  Do not turn away from Him in the hour of your greatest need.  He will save you.  “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord (Jesus) shall be saved.  Do call now.
