Step on the Scale–Alone

Jackie Gleason got on a scale that prints your weight on a card. When the card appeared it said, “Come back – alone.”

The Lord has a scale. Concerning it a mother said a long time ago, “For the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.”

Our scales weigh the material, His the spiritual. Ours weigh the matter, His the motive; ours the fruit, His the faith; ours the body, His the soul.

We’re sensitive when others talk about our weight, or the lack of it. But are we just as sensitive when others talk about our faith as well as our flesh?

I wonder if the Lord will say, “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.”

Prayer: Father, expand our minds and hearts with the deepest love for others. Make us caring and sharing Christians who serve nothing but Thy will and seek nothing but Thy glory: through Christ. Amen.

Botanists have reported that trees need the winds of March to flex their branches and trunks. The sap is drawn up because of the bluster of the wind, and the budding leaves receive the nourishment that they need.

You and I are like the trees. We need the storms to strengthen us.

A blustery period in our lives is often a prelude to a spring of fruit bearing.

Think of Joseph. Had he not been a prisoner, he wouldn’t have become a prime minister.

Are you going through a storm in your life right now? Trust God. He’ll enable you to turn your trials into triumphs, and the bluster of your life into blessings.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, come into my heart and take over in my life. Anything Thou dost say, I will do. I will follow Thy orders any time, any where and at any cost: in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

What Manner of Man is This?

By Ron English

image001-pix-of-ron-e2And when he (Jesus) was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marveled, saying, what manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! Matthew 8:23-27 KJV

An observation about this passage: The disciples of Jesus were still learning about Him. They had seen things-unusual things-marvelous things, but still they didn’t really know Him in His fullness. So when they faced sudden danger and their Lord was fast asleep their fearful hearts retreated to the natural and their thoughts almost paralyzed them with the fear of sudden death. They awakened Jesus only to be rebuked by Him for their lack of faith. I wonder if we wouldn’t have done the same as those frightened disciples. It was the human thing to do. We know from the text that they had not fully understood this Man, their Lord. They said, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and sea obey him!”

We have the advantage of a completed New Testament. We know what manner of Man this was. He was and is God. He created the world-the sea-the wind-the elements. It is no wonder they obey Him. For Him to but speak a mountain can be leveled or cast into the sea. For Him to speak the fishes of the sea can congregate in great numbers so fishermen can fill their nets. He is Lord!

That same Jesus can calm the storm of doubts, fears, troubles and calamities in our lives. It is sad that we spend most of our waking moments trying to accomplish something in the flesh rather than leaning entirely on Him. We know now what they apparently didn’t know then-the safest place in the world was in that boat with Him no matter what the weather outside.

If you are troubled about your eternal future may I point you to a wonderful verse? John 6:37 KJV, “Him (or her) that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.” Another that builds on that promise, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” –Romans 10:13 KJV

Whosoever-a wide word. Wide enough to include all who read these words. Call-an easy word. Everyone knows how to call. It’s easy to do. You can do it at any time and in any place. Saved-a certain word. No equivocation here. You “shall be saved.” (These 3 points taken from C. H. Spurgeon, 1834-1892)

Should you find yourself on the stormy sea of life and are greatly troubled that your ship might sink you would be wise to do as those disciples did and seek the Lord quickly. He’s always near and He is listening for your call. Remember He said, “I will in no wise cast (you) out.”
